PERRY, NY…. A beautiful Friday night welcomed the fans and the cars to Wyoming County International Speedway on NAPA Night. The local NAPA Auto Parts stores in Warsaw and Perry presented the Friday Night program under the lights including the headline 2nd Annual Jim Roberts Memorial for the Super Stocks plus the SST Modifieds and the 4 Cylinders. It was a night of thirds in victory lane as TJ Zacharias (SST Modified), Phil Alhart Jr. (Super Stocks) and Charles Buchanan (4 Cylinders) all won their third victory of the season at the Adrian Road Speed plant. The annual Junkyard Soccer event followed the nights racing activities as the team of track crew person Nate along with Jim Majchrzak and Mike Adamczak won the match against Daniel Majchrzak, Ron Greek and Joe Horvatits by the score of 4-2.Also in competition was the vintage Late Models in an eight lap exhibition and second generation driver Daniel Majchrzak won that event.

The headlining event for the evening was the Jim Roberts
Memorial for the Super Stocks. The Roberts family would like to thank all of
those that supported the event this year to honor one of the nice guys in
racing, former track welder Jim Roberts. When it was all said and done, it was
Fairport, NY’s own Phil Alhart Jr. taking home the victory. It was the third of
the season for the defending track champion.
Defending Race winner Robert Fink and Phil Alhart Jr led
the field to James Mitchell’s green flag for the 50 lap affair and it was Fink
out to the early lead. The strong field of Supers was moving quickly around the
Perry speed plant as action was seen all over the speedway. The first caution came out on lap five for contact
between Austyn Fugle and Mike Chenaille. Both cars were able to rejoin the
field and on the restart, Fink continued to show the way with Lee Sharpsteen
running in second. A couple of laps later, some of the heavy hitters were on
the move. Phil Alhart Jr and Jay Mudra
were able to get around Sharpsteen for the runner up spot and Daniel Majchrzak
and Joe Mancuso right there trying to get into the top five after ten laps of
the scheduled 50.
The yellow lights would come back on one more time on lap
20 as Grace Roberts lost the handle of her Jim Roberts Memorial R7 ride coming
off of turn number two. On that caution, Austyn Fugle had problems and went pit
side, ending his night. On the restart, Jay Mudra went to the outside and got
around Fink coming down the back stretch to take over the top spot with Alhart,
Mancuso and Majchrzak all running inside the top five. At the halfway mark it
was Mudra continuing to lead Fink, Mancuso, Alhart and Majchrzak with Jeremy
Gray and Cassie Logsdon right there as well.
Roberts would once again loose the handle of her machine
off turn four and the caution would come back out on lap number 30. Mudra would
continue to be the head of the class on the restart with Joe Mancuso right on
his back bumper.
The yellow lights would fly once again as heat winner Lee
Sharpsteen looped his TNT Motorsports entry to bring out the fourth caution in
the event. There were problems during the last caution of the night as race
leader Jay Mudra had a right front flat, and second place car Joe Mancuso
suffering a problem and losing oil pressure and heading to the pit area. With
all that being said, and the top two cars in the pits, Robert Fink regained the
lead. That set up a ten lap shootout at the Bullring and Robert Fink was the
first car across the line but failed post-race tech, therefore the win went to
second place driver Phil Alhart Jr. Daniel Majchrzak finished in second with
Jeremy Gray completing the top three with Jay Mudra and Lee Sharpsteen
finishing in positions four and five.
SST Modified feature winner TJ Zacharias |
Ed Schueler and heat winner Dick Kluth led the field of
SST Modifieds to the green flag in their 35 lap feature with Schueler out to
the early lead. Dick Kluth would get around Schueler for the lead on lap two
and just one lap later, TJ Zacharias would take over the lead from his number
five starting position.
Lap cars became a factor early in this event as the
leaders were flying around the 1/3rd mile Perry Bullring. Race
leader Zacharias was out to a full straightaway advantage over the rest of the
field but Greg Utberg erased Zacharias’s lead with a spin in turn four.
That bunched the field up with Zacharias pulling away off
the mid-race restart and John Barber looked to get around Kluth for the runner
up spot but was unsuccessful. Barber had a great battle with Kluth and Jim Love
towards the end of the event with Barber getting loose coming off of four on the
last lap in a “racing incident” with Love, but was able to come back across the
line in fourth position when the race was finished. Once out front, Zacharias
would pull away to seal his third win of 2011 on the Perry Bullring over Dick
Kluth and Jim Love.
4 Cylinder Winner Charles Buchanan - Laura Loooooo Photorgraphy |
Joe Horvatits and Eric Haistreiter led the field of 4
Cylinders to the start of their 20 lap feature event with Haistreiter getting
the early race lead. Charles Buchanan
took the lead away on lap number two and pulled out to a huge advantage over
the field. Buchanan continued to show the way at halfway over Matt Druar, Tom Lalomia, Haistreiter and Jake Lyon.
The Stadium Collision, TDH Refrigeration, Big L Distributers
sponsored 09 of Charles Buchanan pulled away and collected his third win of the
2011 season at WCIS. Matt Druar finished in second followed by Tom Lalomia Jr
in third, Lyon and Hastreiter.
Coming up next week at the Bullring will be Contractor’s
Night sponsored by Elitsac Lumber. The festivities get underway at 7:30pm
