Jimmy Zacharias Tops Field at WCIS

PERRY, NY…. The cars and the stars were on hand for another Friday night filled of racing excitement at Wyoming County International Speedway (WCIS). The weather was perfect for the evening which had music complements of Fugle Motorsports, having Billy Dee (Johnny Cash) and Dayle Ess (Patsy Cline) singing throughout the night to entertain the crowd. The on track racing action was the best so far this season at the 1/3rd mile facility as Candor, NY’s Jimmy Zacharias took top honors in the SST Modified feature. Joe Mancuso won in the Super Stocks and Brian Johnson won in the 4 Cylinders.

SST Feature Winner Jimmy Zacharias
Tom Weist and Ed Schueler led the strong field of SST Modifieds to Starter James Mitchell’s green flag for their 35 lap feature go with Weist showing the way early. Schueler would pass Weist on the second go around to take over the lead and one lap later saw four time feature winner and defending track champion Andy Jankowiak take over at the point.

The yellow lights would come out for Greg Utberg who spun in turn four to bunch the field up for the first time. On the restart, Jankowiak would get loose and lose the handle of his racer in turn two to bring out the caution once again. Jankowiak appeared to be leaking power steering fluid on the track but would be able to get back racing again after the problem was fixed.

The restart saw the Zacharias brothers leading the way with elder brother Jimmy leading younger brother and current point’s leader TJ with six laps completed out of the scheduled 35. Jimmy was able to get on by TJ for the top spot with Matt Kurzejewski running in third position off the restart.

Ed Schueler would spin in turn two to bring out the yellow after many laps of green flag racing in which Jimmy Zacharias would dominate the field with TJ Zacharias and Kurzejewski right there trying to get through the lap cars. The restart saw Jimmy still be in the lead and once again pulled away from the field. “JZ” Jimmy Zacharias would pull off his second win of the season at WCIS with his brother TJ coming home in second and Andy Jankowiak, coming off his power steering issues, came back and finished in third.

Heat winner Austyn Fugle and Jay Canonico would lead the Super Stocks to the green flag with Canonico out front early on. Second heat winner Joe Mancuso would be up to third and challenging the lead duo of Canonico and Fugle. Fugle would edge back around Canonico for the top spot with Mancuso and Phil Alhart Jr right behind him.

Canonico would start getting loose exiting the corners and allowed Alhart and Majchrzak to get on by. Brad Collings slowed with six laps remaining to bring out the lone caution in the event.
Mancuso would get around Fugle with three to go and went on to win his second win of the season. Fugle would finish second and Alhart would cross the line in third. However, Fugle and Daniel Majchrzak were found illegal in post-race tech.

Jason Landcastle and Eric Hastreiter were on the front row for the 20 lap feature event for the 4 Cylinders with Landcastle out to the early race lead. Contact between Nate Kosen and Dakota Packman that sent Packman to the front stretch wall. Both were able to continue on racing for the lap one restart.

That restart saw Landcastle as the leader with Brian Johnson on the move. Johnson, who was last week’s feature winner from Castile took over the top spot on the third lap of the 20 lap feature distance. Johnson would still be the leader at the halfway mark with Landcastle leading Hastreiter with Daniel Majchrzak and cousin Dakota Packman back in the fifth position. One lap later, Hastreiter would get around Landcastle for second place. Brian Johnson would lead the remaining laps to score his second straight feature win over Eric Hastreiter and Jason Landcastle.

Racing resumes next Friday night at the Perry Bullring featuring the SST’s, Super Stocks and 4 Cylinder Stocks. Pit gates open at 5:00pm with the grandstand gates also swinging open at 5pm. The racing action gets underway at 7:30pm sharp.
