Jim Love Scores 1st Win at WCIS

PERRY, NY…. Wyoming County International Speedway had another jammed-packed night of racing on the historic 1/3rd mile oval in Perry, NY. It was a special night at the Bullring as former announcer Tim Packman was on hand to sign his new book; Funny Dan The Racecar Man. ABC Glass Company of Batavia sponsored the night’s activities which included the popular Pirate themed Boat-Trailer Race which saw defending SST Modified champion Andy Jankowiak getting the victory. Groveland’s Jim Love scored his first victory of the season in the SST Modifieds while Buffalo’s Jay Canonico won his third SST Super Stock feature win and Tom Lalomia Jr notched his first career win in the 4 Cylinders.

Jim Love (22) battling Ed Schueler (6)
Ed Schueler and Dick Kluth on the front row for their 35 lap feature event and it was Schueler out to the early lead. Heat winner Jim Love would get around Schueler on lap two to take the lead and Jimmy Zacharias would get around Schueler and Kluth for second place on the opening lap.

Zacharias would continue to pressure Love for the lead early on but made one mistake which cost him the number two spot on the speedway after a spin in turn two as he got loose entering the tricky turn.
After visiting the pits, he was able to jump back out onto the speedway and continued on racing. After the restart, Zacharias went to work driving his brother’s ride for the evening as he worked around Schueler for third and then passed Kluth for second and began chasing down race leader Jim Love.

But all the challenges that Zacharias threw at Love didn’t work as the seasoned veteran from Groveland, NY scored his first win of the season at WCIS. Zacharias would finish close behind in second after falling back late in the event and Dick Kluth competed the top three.

Austyn Fugle (36) Dan Majchrzak (14) and Jay Canonico (13)
Perry, NY residents Mike Chenaille and Brad Collings led the Super Stocks to the green flag and it was Chenaille out to the early race lead. Dale Wolfer lost the handle of the 76 machine on the back stretch bringing out the first caution flag of the night. Battle for the lead off the restart as Fugle and Jay Canonico battling for the top spot but that battle came to an end as Brad Collings slowed to bring out the caution.

Back under the green flag conditions, Canonico and Fugle would continue on their battle for the top spot and Canonico would get around Fugle for the number one position as Fugle got loose coming off turn two. The battle for the lead would tighten up as Fugle had problems and brought out the third and final caution of the night just past the halfway mark of the event.  Canonico would hold off all challenges including two late charges from defending track champion Phil Alhart Jr and Daniel Majchrzak to score his third win of the season.

Brian Johnson (85) and Tom Lalomia Jr (8ball)
Troy Collings and Joe Horvatits were on the front row for the 4 Cylinder feature event and it was fourth place starter Jason Landcastle getting out to the early race lead. Landcastle went around both Collings and Horvatits on the topside of the speedway to be scored as the race leader when they got back to the start finish line to complete the first go around.  Pole sitter Collings had problems and slowed on the front stretch.

On the restart, Landcastle would lead Tom Lalomia Jr and Lalomia cleared Landcastle for the race lead off a great move coming out of turn two. Lalomia would lead Brian Johnson, Jason Landcastle, Eric Hastreiter, and Kalie Clementi in the top five for much of the event.
It was all Tom Lalomia Jr on this night as his 8ball was right on cue as he would hold off 2009 track champion Brian Johnson to pick up his first career feature win. Landcastle would cross the line in third followed by Hastreiter and Kalie Clementi.

In the final event of the night, defending SST Modified Champion Andy Jankowiak scored the win in the Boat Trailer Race. Jankowiak got around both Daniel Majchrzak and Jim Majchrzak to pick up the win. It was Andy’s appearance in the Pirate-Trailer Race.  He crossed the line first after a great battle with 4 Cylinder regular Joe Horvatits and the vehicle that Andy was driving crossed the line first, but didn’t make it to victory lane as it stopped in turn three. So Jankowiak did only what Andy J knows how, climbed on the roof of the car in celebration and ran to victory lane to pick up the winning trophy and get the “Kodak Moment” in winners circle. Andy wanted to support the speedway even though he is waiting for his engine to return from the shop on his SST Modified.

WCIS will return to action on Friday July 22nd on Farm Days night at the speedway. There will be a hay ride for the kids throughout the evening. Gates open at 5pm and racing gets underway at 7:30pm.
